How To Prevent Winter Sports Injuries

Despite the shorter days and chilly temperature, winter months are always considered as the best times of the year among sports fans. No matter how skilled you are at hiking, ice skating, snow mobile rising and skiing, it is possible that we will eventually be affected by serious injuries. Injury prevention is important if we love hit to the slopes regularly. There are things that we can do to stay fit and be on the lookout for injuries. For sports fans, winter is a really wonderful time. Many of us tend to spend colder months indoor and we are more likely to have a sedentary lifestyle by eating meals and snacks in front of the TV, instead of venturing in a frigid, cold environment. By staying active outdoor, we could prevent the feeling of melancholy that affect many people who are trapped indoor. It is highly encouraged to participate in all kinds of sports to avoid being affected by injuries.

In many countries, snowboarding is considered as a leading cause of injuries during winter. Many thousands of people are brought to ER and other emergency services in North America, due to various snowboarding injuries. Skiing is considered as the second riskiest winter sports and due to various mishaps they did in the slopes, many people are also hurt every year. It is crucial to be aware about the risks of winter sports and we shouldn’t hesitate about taking part. There are various things that we can do to reduce our risks of injury and it is possible to have a great winter sports season. We should be aware that we shouldn’t only need to play hard, but also to play safely and smartly.

It is important to understand that winter sports are seasonal and it could be necessary to re-train ourselves after not doing the activity for nearly a year. If we have been on sled or skis for more than 9 months, then it is important to know that we need to re-train ourselves. After such a long break, it is necessary to know that our muscles could get injured due to specific movements that we do repeatedly. During our first day of skiing and snow-shoeing, we could do various preparations, such as stretching our muscles and lifting weights. It is important to make sure that we are properly conditioned for the activity. We could simulate various movements repeatedly in indoor situations. This will re-train our muscles and minds for the upcoming winter sports session.

We should check our gear and this is especially true if we have just brought it out from the storage shed. We need to check whether our helmet has good integrity and our footwear still maintains its water resistance. Fragile, old equipments with fine cracks, due to last year’s rough usages could leave us vulnerable to injury this year. It means that we should consider whether it is necessary to purchase all the equipments. It is important to bring enough water and it is actually possible to get dehydrated in the winter after doing intense activities.
